FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "Nothing but you has any power over you." It's a lesson in personal growth that Capt. Joe Colón Jr., a Fort Bragg parachute rigger with arrows for the last time in the June 19-29 Army Games, learned about the change little by little after being injured jumping.

For Colón, however, the injury was not caused by a hard landing, but by a bad jump during a basketball game. It happened a few days before his reserve unit was due to deploy to Djibouti, but Colón found himself heading to the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Sidelined by his hamstring injury and ligament damage, the Puerto Rican fell into disarray. Colón was also very embarrassed to be around other WTU soldiers whom he said had legitimate "wounds" from the war. That guilt grew quickly.
Although his reserve team continued to support him, Colón couldn't help feeling that he had let them down.
At Fort Eustis, Colón was approached by Sammy Nates, the WTU athletics coordinator, who asked what sport he would like to play. Colón with his left leg in plaster got the idea to enter an air rifle or rifle competition. After trying both, the sports director asked Colón about archery.
Coincidentally, the only time Colón shot a bow and arrow was when he was growing up in Lebanon, New Hampshire. A second place in the archery league will remember him a few years later and when Colón's players were eliminated he decided to try archery.

A week after Colón got his new bow, he had it custom made to fit his shape. "The thing about the double bow is that it's a very intimate weapon," Colón said. "Everything about this, including the artwork, is designed for the individual shooter."
Despite being the only archer this year, Colón must compete for a medal at the 2015 Warrior Games. In addition to helping Colón regain his archery talent with finesse and accuracy, Colón thanks Nates Athletic Coordinator Jessie White, the archery coach and the staff of WTU due to its rapid success. "WTU is doing a great job improving the care we receive," Colón said. "He lets us go as soon as possible. It really helped me."
Colón appreciates the humor of archery, martial arts, which instill order and peace in him. According to Colón, his time and energy are now absorbed in the process, which helps him regain control of his life.
"The beauty of that is that it translates really well into some of my goals for change. When I go back to the original world, I realize there's a way to manage my work." With plans to enter the business, 36-year-old Colón says that as long as he respects the steps, "success will come".

At WTU, Colón developed many revolutionary goals. The main among them is not to return to the state of depression and open yourself to new opportunities. To achieve these goals, he had to swallow his pride and let others advise him on the path he was taking.
It also meant letting go of his guard and showing his weaknesses. Sometimes in life, Colón said, it's all about "getting out of the way."
