Phillip Karber has traveled to Ukraine more than 30 times in recent years, spending six months on the front lines of the conflict between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed separatists. Few have more first-hand experience or a more nuanced understanding of the hybrid war that has been waged in the region since 2014. Dr. Karber recently visited the US Military Academy to share what he learned with cadets and faculty. He described a completely different threat than the US military has faced in recent years, and a completely different operational environment than the one US forces have faced during their deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan over the past fifteen years. The author of the original work, Adam Kredo, continued with Inhofe's office. Inhofe was understandably upset about the scam and issued a statement:
"Members of the Ukrainian Parliament are really doing themselves a disservice by giving us these photos in printed form as if they came straight from the camera. We are confident in publishing these photos because they are consistent with the reporting of what is happening in the region Responds. It angers me to know that it seems that one of the photos available now was forged from an AP photo taken in 2008. That doesn't change the fact that there is plenty of evidence that Russia used T-72 tanks into the country and pro-Russian separatists are killing Ukrainians in cold blood."

If you have read my paper, you know that I do not think highly of the work of Dr. Phillip A. Karber. He is often described as "The Georgetown Professor." To be clear, he was an adjunct assistant professor, as I was in the years before I went to Monterey, but that's the least hyperbolic statement we'll cover today.
Karber has already explained how he accidentally confirmed the origin of the misidentified images: He said he was confused about which photos he was checking. “Running to the airport and trying to respond to a last-minute request with a short fuse,” Karber told Gray, “I mistakenly thought we were talking about the same photo ... but I never thought about the 3 photos of Russian armor Part of that package or under consideration ." Exactly why there were three mislabeled photos in the first place isn't really explained, at least not to my satisfaction.
In the conversation with Karber, it seemed that there were enough of these misunderstandings. If you get to know him, he is a very charming and personable guy. We have a group of mutual friends, which makes this column uncomfortable to write. But it helps illustrate a larger lesson, important enough to make future social engagements very uncomfortable. In this new age of selfies and flash mobs, open-source information allows independent analysts to fill in some of the gaps left by government secrecy — and perhaps mitigate the lingering effects of the decade-long aftermath of the Iraqi WMD fiasco.
