Fort Leavenworth's population includes approximately 3,700 active duty personnel, 1,270 permanent cadets, and 2,800 civilian personnel. The nearby communities of Atchison, Basehor, Lansing and Leavenworth in Kansas and Platte City and Weston Fort Leavenworth in Missouri provide housing, employment and other services to military families. The cost of living in Leavenworth is lower than the national average, so rental housing and real estate in the area are reasonable.

The city of Atchison, Kansas, is about 25 miles north of Fort Leavenworth. The riverside city has a population of around 10,600. Atchison is home to several historic homes and museums, including the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum and the Atchison Railroad Museum. The city's International Friendship Forest, overlooking Lake Warnock, is a living monument to the history of aviation and aerospace. Atchison also has an event center, dog park, community garden and several community parks.

There are many options for your child's education near Fort Leavenworth. Kansas offers traditional public schools, as well as public charter schools and private schools. For younger children, there are a variety of on-post and off-site daycare and local childcare programs.

Children in grades K-9 who live on post can attend schools in the Fort Leavenworth Unified School District 207. Children in grades 10-12 who live on post can attend Leavenworth High School in the Leavenworth district USD 453. There is no DoDEA schools on post.
